Will Leech sets sail on international course

Year 11 College sailor Will Leech has finished 10th at the Youth Sailing World Championships on Lake Garda in Italy.

Along with his Auckland-based crew, Sean Kensington, Will has impressed in the 29er class. Representing New Zealand, he has finished 3rd in two of the heats and gained a great deal of knowledge from competing against the best young sailors from around the world. In total, 418 sailors from 70 countries spent a week in northern Italy, racing in various competitions.

Prior to the pinnacle event in northern Italy, Will finished 9th in the 29er European Championships in Gdynia, Poland. In a field of 138 boats, Will 鈥 along with his crew 鈥 finished as the top overseas team.

A member of the Charteris Bay Yacht Club, Will won the Yachting New Zealand Youth Championships in the 29er class at Murrays Bay, Auckland in April. Will and his crew won half of the 12 fleet races to finish 15 points ahead of their nearest rivals. In March, Will also won the youth division at the 2024 New Zealand WASZP National Championships off Takapuna, Auckland.
