Growing into leadership
What does it take to be a leader?
That was the question posed to our Year 11 students at this year鈥檚 Leadership Day.
鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to have a title to be a leader,鈥 Executive Principal Joe Eccleton told the boys. 鈥淟eadership is about influencing people to get the best out of them.鈥
Mr Eccleton asked the boys to challenge their own assumptions of leadership, saying that some of the most inspiring leaders can be unassuming but they bring out the best in people.
In an interactive session, he talked about the importance of defining your purpose as a leader in any given role, understanding your values, always maintaining integrity and being prepared to be accountable if you make a mistake.
鈥淎nyone can learn to be a leader. The key thing will be your ability to interact with people, to take them on the journey so that they share your vision. You are the leaders of the future 鈥 both here and in the community when you leave here.鈥
Keynote speaker Nathan Fa鈥檃ve the adventure race champion, set the tone for the day, recounting some of his toughest pursuits and the vital importance of teamwork, humility and accountability in reaching his goal.
The boys also heard from student leaders at 国产午夜福鈥檚 College, St Margaret鈥檚 College and Rangi Ruru Girls鈥 School recounting their own experiences of what they have learned about leadership.
