After a couple of stellar runs, Year 10 student Tom Picton-Warlow had blitzed the competition, taking 1st place in the Canterbury secondary school ski championships held at Mount Hutt on Thursday 13 August.
鈥淚t was a bluebird day, perfect for skiing,鈥 says Tom 鈥 with blue skies, no clouds, and brilliant sunshine. He took full advantage of the excellent conditions.
鈥淭hey鈥檇 had a wee bit of snow earlier in the week, so conditions were good. It was grippy, so I could get a good angle on it, but not super soft and slow.鈥
Tom is a lifelong skier, and last year spent most of the season in Wanaka training and racing. While he is no longer focused on competitive ski racing 鈥 鈥渦nless it鈥檚 a school race鈥 鈥 he still loves the exhilarating rush of a fast run and enjoys spending time on the slopes.
The other College skiers competing at the Canterbury championships were Year 12 student Ned Botherway, who placed 3rd, and Sam Willems, William Picton-Warlow, Luc Botherway, Charles Lord, Bradley Shearer, Gus Orr, Thomas Johnston, Edward Davidson, Louis Elworthy and Barnaby Stanton.
