Nick Harvey (11731) knows better than anyone else the importance of brand.

But the CEO of 国产午夜福church-based creative agency Plato says having a brand isn鈥檛 just for a business or product.

With a staff of 70, Nick says job candidates who stand out are those who know their own strengths and are able to convey how they can uniquely contribute to the company鈥檚 vision.

鈥淧ersonal branding is crucial. It鈥檚 essential to approach applications with a clear sense of purpose, backed by research on the business and its culture. Preparedness and authenticity go a long way in showing genuine interest.鈥

Nick has been back in 国产午夜福church for seven years, after 13 years in Melbourne at Clemenger BBDO followed by four years honing his management skills at Colenso BBDO in Auckland.

鈥淐oming back to 国产午夜福church was both a professional and personal decision. It鈥檚 where my roots are, and I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to the South Island鈥檚 creative industry, helping to put 国产午夜福church鈥檚 creative talent on the map.

鈥淢y career trajectory has defined my personal brand as a leader who values creative problem-solving, team empowerment, and a commitment to delivering value,鈥 Nick says.

He advises young job seekers to build their own personal brand.

鈥淭hink of yourself as a brand with distinct attributes鈥攚hat makes you special? Jeff Bezos famously said, 鈥榊our brand is what others say about you when you鈥檙e not in the room.鈥 Ask yourself what you want to be known for and focus on qualities like authenticity, consistency, and reliability,鈥 Nick advises.

鈥淏eyond technical skills, I look for traits such as drive, curiosity, and adaptability. Be intentional with networking, volunteer in relevant projects, and seek leadership roles that can expand both your skills and your connections.鈥

Nick鈥檚 other top tips include:

  • A CV and cover letter 鈥 the first impression of a personal brand
A well-structured CV that highlights key achievements rather than just listing roles is invaluable. A cover letter that reflects genuine understanding of an organisation鈥檚 work and values shows you鈥檝e done your research and are ready to contribute meaningfully.
  • Dress, personality, and extra-curricular pursuits
It鈥檚 important to dress the part, but equally to remain authentic. At Plato, we look for personality and values that resonate with our team鈥檚 spirit and goals. Candidates who are involved in sports, cultural activities, or volunteer work tend to stand out as well-rounded and committed. These pursuits often translate to the dedication and teamwork skills we value.
  • Elevator pitch
Consider having a concise 鈥渆levator pitch鈥 that captures the essence of your personal brand鈥攜our strengths, relevant experiences, and career aspirations. This quick summary can help convey your value instantly in any networking situation. Personal branding allows you to control the narrative around yourself and ensures that people see your strengths in the best light.
  • Strengthening your personal brand
Building your network and maintaining an authentic online presence are essential to staying relevant in today鈥檚 market.

Nick cautions that developing a personal brand takes time.

鈥淏ut it鈥檚 a powerful asset that will follow you throughout your career. Embrace it as an ongoing journey, one that reflects your growth and allows you to make a genuine impact in your chosen field.鈥
